Recipe: Disk usage hacks

Syntax:
$ du FILENAME1 FILENAME2 ..

eg:
$ du file.txt
4

Display disk usage for all files and folders recursively

du -a DIRECTORY

eg:
$  du -a test
4	test/output.txt
4	test/process_log.sh
4	test/pcpu.sh
16	test

$ du test
16 test

Display disk usage in KB, MB or Blocks
======================================
du -h FILENAME

$ du -sh test/pcpu.sh 
4.0K	test/pcpu.sh
# Multiple file arguments are accepted
OR
# du -h DIRECTORY
$ du -h test/
16K	test/

Display grant total sum of disk usage
=====================================
$ du -c FILENAME1 FILENAME2..
eg:
du -c process_log.sh pcpu.sh 
4	process_log.sh
4	pcpu.sh
8	total

OR
$ du  -c DIRECTORY
Eg:
$ du -c test/
16	test/
16	total

OR
$ du -c *.txt
# Wildcards


$ du -s FILES(s)
$ du -sh DIRECTORY

Eg:
$ du -sh slynux
680K	slynux

Printing files in specified units
=================================

To print size in bytes (By default),
$ du -b FILE(s)
To print size in kilobytes,
$ du -k FILE(s)
To print size in megabytes,
$ du -m FILE(s)
To print size in given BLOCK size specified,
$ du -B BLOCK_SIZE FILE(s)
# BLOCK_SIZE specified in bytes

Excluding files from disk usage calculation
===========================================

1) Wildcards
Use:
$ du –exclude “WILDCARD” DIRECTORY
Eg:
$ du –exclude “*.txt” FILES(s) 
# Excludes all .txt files from calculation

2) Exclude list
We can specify a list of files to be excluded from a file as 
$ du –exclude-from EXCLUDE.txt DIRECTORY
# EXCLUDE.txt is the file containing list

Restricting with depth
======================
$ du –depth 2 DIRECTORY

Finding 10 largest size files from a given directory
====================================================

$ du -ak SOURCE_DIR | sort -nrk 1 | head

Large files (Without directories)

$ find . -type f -exec du -k {} \; | sort -nrk 1 | head

Disk free information:

$ df
