Recipe: Compress with bunzip (bzip)

Compress with bzip2
===================
$ bzip2 filename
$ ls 
filename.bz2

Extract bzipped file
====================
$ bunzip2 filename.bz2

stdin and stdout
================
$ cat file | bzip2 -c > file.tar.bz2

Creating bzipped tarball

Method - I 
$ tar -cjvvf archive.tar.bz2 [FILES] 
or 
$ tar -cavvf archive.tar.bz2 [FILES] 
# -a option specifies automatically detect compression format from extension. 

Method - II 
$ tar -cvvf archive.tar [FILES] 
# tarball first 
$ bzip2 archive.tar 
# Compress it after tarballing. 

Extracting bzipped tarball

$ tar -xjvvf archive.tar.bz2 -C extract_directory 

Keep input files without removing them
======================================
$ bunzip2 test.bz2 -k


Compression ratio
=================

$ bzip2 -9 test.img
# Compress maximum

Use 1 to 9
