Recipe: Compress with gunzip (gzip)

Compress a file with gzip
=========================

$ gzip filename

Extract a gzip compressed file
==============================

$ gunzip filename.gz


To list out the properties of a compressed file
===============================================

$ gzip -l test.txt.gz 
         compressed        uncompressed  ratio uncompressed_name 
                 35                   6 -33.3% test.txt 

stdin and stdout
================
$ cat file | gzip -c > file.tar.gz


gzip with tarball
=================

Method - I

$ tar -czvvf archive.tar.gz [FILES]
or
$ tar -cavvf archive.tar.gz [FILES]


Extract tarball
===============
$ tar -xzvvf archive.tar.gz -C extract_directory
OR
$ tar -cavvf archive.tar.gz [FILES]



Method - II
$ tar -cvvf archive.tar [FILES]
# Create tarball first
$ gzip archive.tar
# Compress it after tarballing.


zcat
====
$ ls
test.gz
$ zcat test.gz
A test file

$ ls 
test.gz


Compression ratio
=================

$ gzip -9 test.img
# Compress maximum

use 1 to 9
